The Artistic Journey of Patrick Reynolds
Patrick Reynolds is a talented artist and lifelong Philadelphian whose journey began on the Atlantic City boardwalk, where he sold sketches and portraits to fund his art education. He later secured a position at a full-service sign shop, creating creative advertisements, display posters, and show cards for department stores.
In 1966, Patrick enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving honorably for over six years, including time in the Brown Water Navy. Driven by his dream of becoming a full-time artist, he used his VA benefits to pursue further education. While in school, he worked at a sign and print shop, blending classroom learning with practical experience—an approach that helped him develop a unique artistic style that combines traditional techniques with modern influences.
Throughout his career, Patrick has worn many artistic hats: sign painter, portrait artist, muralist, book cover illustrator, and art instructor. His work has been featured in juried exhibitions, earning awards and recognition. His illustrations are housed in the Library of Congress, and his mixed media piece, “Inca, Steam Tug,” received praise from the Merchant Marine Academy. A lifetime member of Portrait Artists of America, Patrick also maintained his own gallery in Brunswick, Georgia, during the 1990s, where he showcased both his works and pieces by European masters and contemporary pop culture artists.
Specializing in maritime art, Patrick loves working in various sizes and mediums, with a particular passion for miniature paintings on 2½” x 3½” canvases. Later in life, he moved to Durango, Colorado, guided by Spirit and inspired by his lifelong dream of learning to fly fish. With the mentorship of a friend, he explored the Rocky Mountain rivers—carrying his sketchbook, lunch, and fishing gear—living out his dream amidst stunning natural scenery.
Though health issues eventually slowed him down, the rivers of the Animas, Dolores, and San Juan continued to be his sanctuary. Despite the physical challenges of traversing the rugged terrain of the Four Corners region, Patrick persisted, finding healing in the diverse landscapes and Pueblo culture. He often spends his days outdoors, sketching under shaded trees, grateful for each moment.
He fondly recalls mornings greeted by a doe and her fawn, and late afternoons watching eagles swoop down to catch their prey. Patrick humbly admits, “I am no match for their skill and grace,” and expresses deep gratitude, saying, “I give thanks and count my blessings. The energy of the Four Corners saved me.”
Today, Patrick continues to create art—whether with his sketchpad, oils, or watercolors—finding inspiration in nature and the spirit of life around him. His stories and artwork reflect a profound connection to the land, the sea, and the enduring power of dreams.
